Northern Belle Arrives at Cremyll

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2013

NORTHERN BELLE is arriving at Cremyll on Sunday March 31, 2013. NORTHERN BELLE was built in 1929 for Mount Edgcumbe Estate to operate the ferry service as the ARMADILLO. She was chartered and later sold to the Millbrook Steamboat and Trading Company in the 1940s. Converted from steam to diesel propulsion in 1945 she was renamed NORTHERN BELLE.

On the demise of the Millbrook Steamboat Company NORTHERN BELLE passed to the ownership of Tamar Cruising / Plymouth Boat Trips - the present operator of the Cremyll Ferry which holds the council contract for operating the ferry service until 2017.

The Cremyll Ferry is a busy commuter route being served by buses on the Rame Penisular in Cornwall and by Plymouth city buses. Near the Cornish terminal at Cremyll lies the Edgcumbe Estate and Stately home - poplar with trippers as well the Edgcumbe Arms Inn which offers excellent views of shipping movements from its outside seating.
