Dartmouth Higher Ferry at Work

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2013

HIGHER FERRY seen at the Dartmouth side of the River Dart (first four photographs) and at the Kingswear side on Wednesday October 23, 2013.

The current HIGHER FERRY was built jointly by Ravestein of the Netherlands and Pendennis Shipyard of Cornwall. It entered service in July 2009. HIGHER FERRY carries up to a maximum of 32 cars. It can carry buses, coaches and freight vehicles up to 16 tons. The passenger capacity is 250.

Crossing time is 3 minutes compared to it's predecessor's 5 minutes and the vessel is exceptionally quiet - making something akin to a low whining sound rather than the traditional sound of its 49 year old predecessor's paddle wheels.
