Snowdrop Emergency Exercise

Photographs  Peter Challis 2014

An emergency exercise took place on the Mersey on Thursday March 06, 2014.

The exercise revolved around a 'collision' between Mersey Ferry SNOWDROP and CarMet Tug Company's Pilot Launch VENOM. The captain of SNOWDROP was 'incapacitated'  and command taken by the mate! Initial reports suggested that 5 persons were injured but non overboard, ZEEBRUGGE came to the assistance of Snowdrop whose steering had been 'disabled'. It seems 'white-powder' had also escaped as had an oil slick!

SNOWDROP requested ZEEBRUGGE take her in tow to Woodside Terminal, this took some time! Once there the casualties had seemingly multiplied many casulaties onboard the ferry. MF1 (Mersey Fire and Rescue RIB) was also tasked to the scene and 'recovered' two injured. There was much radio traffic twixt the Coastguard and SNOWDROP which resulted in it being met at Woodside by the ambulance and police!

An hour or so passed whilst MF1 returned to Liverpool and was then re-tasked to search the shoreline up to and past Tranmere. Basically it was all done and dusted within an hour but dragged on for a further hour or more!

Zeebruge 'assisting' following the 'collision' and about to come to port side at the mate's request to take the tow.

MF1 'recovering' casualties, no-one 'overboard though but a 100 yds or maybe it was metres (!) oil slick reported!
