Balmoral Calls at Farsund

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2012

Fred Olsen Lines BALMORAL called at Farsund in southwest  Norway on Thursday August 09, 2012 her final call on cruise L1212. Farsund is only capable of handling smaller cruise ships as the entrance to the natural harbour is through a very narrow channel which can be clearly seen in photographs at the bottom of this page. A stern tug is required to keep the ship straight as she passes though this channel. FFS ATLAS of Farsund Fortoyningsselskap assisted BALMORAL. She is the former FLYING SPINDRIFT of Svitzer Marine based on the UK east coast sold in early summer 2012. Also assisting berthing was the FAROY handling ropes.

On arrival at Farsund BALMORAL was greeted by local school children who performed a number of songs for passengers. Due to low capacity on the shuttle buses a mix of shuttle bus / tender was provided for passengers who did not want to make the pleasant one mile walk into the attractive fishing village. Both on arrival and departure BALMORAL was escorted by the local lifeboat AEGIR which unusually acted as pilot vessel.
