Dittisham and Kingswear Princess at Dartmouth Station Pontoon

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2014

DITTISHAM PRINCESS and KINGSWEAR PRINCESS are seen at Dartmouth Station on May 27, 2014. KINGSWEAR PRINCESS normally operates the Dartmouth passenger ferry service to Kingswear Station.

Dartmouth Station is unique in that although it boasts a station building, now entirely used as a cafe, it never had any railway tracks. Passengers used the then GWR passenger ferry to cross to Kingswear Station to join the train.

The service passed from British Railways Sealink in the early 1970s to the local council and eventually passed back into railway ownership when the ferry was acquired by the Dart Valley Railway plc on its acquisition of the River Link business which had in turn acquired the ferry from the council.
