Isle of Lewis MES Deployment at Birkenhead

Photographs  Peter Challis 2014

ISLE OF LEWIS of Caledonian MacBryane arrived at Birkenhead on Monday January 27, 2014 for her annual refit at Cammell Laird. Prior to the commencement of refit work her Marine Evacuation System [MES] was tested. Fortunately Peter Challis just happened to be passing by on Duke Street Bridge when he spotted something going on and captured in a great series of shots not only the operation of the MES and evacuation drill but also the removal to land of the deployed apparatus and the removal from the ship of her lifeboats and life rafts for servicing. Events which happen quite regularly but which are seldom captured in full in pictures.

Two self-inflating life-rafts thrown into the dock and secured to the escape-chute

.... and the escape chutes
After the MES test the equipment was laid out on the quayside. Meanwhile a crane was in position to remove the ship's lifeboats and life rafts for servicing.
