It is rather unusual for passenger vessels which visit the Mersey to carry a Liverpool Pilot. Passenger ships which sail to and from the Mersey on a regular basis are usually commanded by a Captain who has a pilotage exemption certificate.

Quite often when BALMORAL calls on Merseyside the Pilot remains on board for the full day. However, on Saturday June 21, passengers were treated to the rare sight of PV PUFFIN collecting the pilot near Q1. Later in the day the pilot for the inbound voyage was delivered by PV SKUA. This is the first time it has been possible to feature close up shots of the Liverpool Pilot Vessels in action on Irish Sea Shipping
