A Visit to Tenacious

Photographs  John H. Luxton & Ian Collard 2009

The Jubilee Sailing Trust's TENACIOUS visited Merseyside over the weekend of June 12 - 15, 2009. Her arrival marked the conclusion of a voyage from Waterford to Liverpool via Peel. She was photographed above by Ian Collard as she arrived on the Mersey, bound for West Float, Birkenhead. Departure for Southampton being scheduled for 15:00 on Monday June 15.

On Saturday June 13, 2009 the Merseyside Branch of the World Ship Society visited the ship. Photographs by John H. Luxton, below. TENACIOUS and fleetmate LORD NELSON are the only sailing ships in the world adapted to accommodate passengers (voyage crew) with a variety of physical disabilities  who work with the able-bodied voyage to sail the vessel.

Lifts give access to all parts of the ship including foc'sle and bridge deck. Tactile markings on the rails assist the  visually impaired to find their way around and inicate the direction of the bow
The voyage crew are berthed by watch in four areas of the ship. Disabled members of the voyage crew are "buddied" with an able bodied member.
The ship boasts a bar at the stern - "The Courage Bar" an area in which her wooden framing can be appreciated.
