Unveiling of the HMS Birkenhead Memorial at Woodside

On March 05, 2014 a memorial to those lost in the HMS BIRKENHEAD disaster on the coast of South Africa in 1845 was unveiled at Birkenhead Woodside. There was a well attended and moving ceremony was held well attended by Army, Royal Marines, Scottish veterans, and cadets as well as the designer of the memorial, Mayor of Wirral and the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Dame Lorna Muirhead.

Memorial designer Jemma Twigg a student at Birkenhead Sixth Form College provided the winning design from a competition among local art colleges. The memorial was financed by Cammell Laird and built by its apprentices.
