Historic Steamship Stord I

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2012

The passenger cargo vessel SS STORD I was built for Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskibsselskab, Bergen in 1913 as the STORD for operation between Stavanger-Sunnhordland-Hardanger and Bergen. She was rebuilt as a motorship between 1947 and 1949. in 1962 she collided with Fred.Olsen Lines BRAVO and was sold out of service in 1969 when she became a rehabilitation centre for alcoholics. She was acquired by Veteranskipslaget Fjordabåten for preservation in 1980, converted back to steam and restored to her 1931 appearance. Unfortunately a few years later she was badly damaged by fire in 1987 and restoration had to commence again.

STORD I is seen here berthed in Bergen harbour on August 08, 2012 and seen later the same day from Fred. Olsen Lines BALMORAL as she departed from Bergen making her presence felt with her shrill steam whistle.
