HMS Plymouth Awaits Her Fate

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2012

During early March 2012, the news began to spread that HMS PLYMOUTH has been sold to Turkish ship breakers. The vessel has been laid up in Vittoria Dock, Birkenhead since the Warship Preservation Trust went into liquidation in early 2006 having passing into the ownership of Peel Holdings. Several attempts to find a new home for the vessel at Hayle, Plymouth and most recently at Falmouth have failed.

With the redevelopment of Birkenhead Docks imminent the and Peel starting to clear junk out of Birkenhead Docks it is seems inevitable that the asbestos riddled vessel will be "recycled", unless there is an 11th hour stay of execution and someone can provide a suitable berth and settle any outstanding debts due to Peel Group. Details of what has happened with regards to relocating the vessel can be found in the discussion forum associated with the HMS Plymouth Association and on the same site's Latest News Page.

The following photographs were taken on the morning of Saturday March 17, 2012. Two Canada geese were on guard duty at the gangway!
