Titanic Crowds at Albion House Gather For Public Opening

Photographs  John H. Luxton & Peter Challis 2014

On Saturday March 01, 2014 probably the largest crowd gathered outside 30 James Street "Albion House" since the announcement of the sinking of the Olympic Class ship TITANIC in April 1912. The reason for the gathered crowds 102 years later was occasion of the opening of the building for public inspection by its new owners Signature Living who are undertaking extensive refurbishment work and converting it into a hotel.

The hotel is due to open during 2014. Above the door a replica White Star Line burgee flew this had been provided by Paul Louden-Brown who had the flag made to an original pattern.

Your web master arrived just after 09:30 and there were already two queues, one stretching up James Street past the station and the over down towards the traffic lights with the junction of The Strand. Deciding to take a wander around the waterfront and return later in the hope the queues might have dissipated he returned just after 12:00 to find the queues considerably longer and abandoned plans for going inside!
