The Column - How to Waste 500,000 on a Non Event

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2013

First proposed in 2009 and due to be operational during Olympic Year 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad "The Column" was intended to project a column of steam 2 kilometres into the sky from a barge moored in Birkenhead Docks. However, various technical and planning delays meant it was not ready for Olympic Year and in April 2013 it was announced that the project which had cost over 500,000 of public money provided by the Arts Council via Lottery funding had been abandoned. The Column Barge is seen in East Float on April 17, 2013.
