A Visit to HMS Edinburgh at Cammell Laird

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2013

The high spot of the Battle of the Atlantic 70th Commemorations at Liverpool was the return to Cammell Laird of type 42 destroyer HMS EDINBURGH. Built at the Cammell Laird yard she was launched in 1983 and commissioned in 1985. She is the last type 42 in service and is due to decommission in Portsmouth in early June 2013. As part of the Battle of the Atlantic 70th Commemorations HMS EDINBURGH berthed in Cammell Laird wet basin.

HMS EDINBURGH was open to the public on Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 25 to 27. For the first time in many years the public were given access to the Cammell Laird yard (public access had been granted in the past for some launching ceremonies but that was many years ago). It had been intended and publicised that HMS EDINBURGH would have also been joined by the French F792 PREMIER- MAITRE L'HER but she along with several other ships due to attend the BoA70 Event did not materialise.
