HMS Edinburgh Returns to Her Birth Place

Photographs  John H. Luxton 2013

Probably the high spot of the Battle of the Atlantic 70th Commemorations at Liverpool was the return to Cammell Laird of type 42 destroyer HMS EDINBURGH. Built at the Cammell Laird yard she was launched in 1983 and commissioned in 1985. She is the last type 42 in service and is due to decommission in Portsmouth in early June 2013. About 40 people mustered at Monk's Ferry to watch her return to the place of her birth on the evening of May 23, 2013, however, she did not enter the yard until around 21:30 by which time all but the most dedicated had wandered away. For a brief few seconds as she stemmed the tide assisted by Svitzer Tugs she was bathed in light from the setting sun as it poked its way through the generally cloudy skies.
